Alberta launches CAD2 M funding for brand spanking new energy storage systems development

Alberta Innovates - Energy and The environment Solutions (AI-EES) has launched a CAD2 million (USD1. 8 M) capital to develop most promising technologies in support of grid-scale energy storage in Alberta.

AI-EES has released a Call for Expression of Interests for what they called 'Next Generation Energy Storage Technologies' in order to accelerate the deployment amongst intermittent renewable electricity in Alberta, Canada.

The call for proposals is normally seeking technology solutions with the primary potential to offer cost-effective bulk energy levels storage on Alberta's interconnected electric energy grid. Despite not being aimed toward particualr technology, the call is intended to meet confident characteristics such as: high round-trip decrease, including electricity stored and all other energy levels inputs; scalability to reach multi-MW size; high storage capacity, or ability to establishment many hours of energy; high life cycle, considering minimal performance degradation and lower price, including capital operating costs.

The email also sets up the scope along with lab and bench-scale proof-of-concept vitrine projects, prototype development, small-scale initial facilities and feasibility analysis or sometimes engineering design.

A further development of sustainable energy could help Alberta meet its natural environment change goals with a target amongst 20% of electricity coming from sustainable sources by 2030 and an electricity storage capacity of 2. 5% the total electric energy generation.

Thermal energy storage appliances developed in Concentrated Solar Power crops could be an interesting approach to be progressed through this program. Proposals will be authentic from anywhere globally. However , students must demonstrate that the technology can be applied and well-suited for grid-scale energy levels storage on Alberta's interconnected electric battery system. In addition , applicants must illustrate how the technology will be transferred to Alberta during or after the project as well as how it will be implemented for the benefit of Alberta.

"The province of Alberta boasts strong wind and solar energy plausible, but electricity needs to be available once light switches go on, not just once wind is blowing and the sun's heat is shining. Energy storage devices will assist in making widespread use of such resources, " says Mark High seasons, Director of Renewable Energy for AI-EES.

"This initiative is an indication amongst Alberta's desire to play a control role in shaping the future of energy levels storage. Our Call of Plans will help AI-EES meet its hopes for adoption of renewable energy and also developing energy storage for unexplained renewable electricity onto the comarcal electric grid. "

This take those is designed to help enable broader make use of intermittent renewable energy by developing energy levels storage technologies well-suited for Alberta's interconnected electric system.

AI-EES written a Call for Proposals to spark the increased use of renewable energy as Alberta. Applications are due Jan 29, 2015. The Corporation will create funding for up to $250, 000 per authorised, authorized project with up to $2 Poids of funds committed. Proposals are accepted from around the globe; however , students must demonstrate that the technology can be applied and well-suited for Alberta.
